For defending himself and to teach Lawrence a lesson, Ralph Macchio learns Karate from a handyman named Miyagi.

Because the film was a sleeper hit, it got three more sequels called The Karate Kid 2 (1986), The Karate Kid 3 (1989), and The Next Karate Kid (1994). After the first movie, Ralph Macchio was further taken as the main character in the 2nd and 3rd sequel in which he was 24 and 27 years of age respectively.
